Showdown

Ted Dekker's book, Showdown is about Paradise, Colorado. A man called Marsuvees Black walks into town and murders a man at the very beginning. A boy named Johnny witnesses Black killing the man, and tells everyone about it. By the time he tells someone, Black has already lured the entire town into his lies and deception. Meanwhile, in a hidden monastery not far off, a project called Project Showdown, thus the title of the book, is going on. It is an attempt to see if true faith can really move mountains. It is made up of 37 orphans that were brought in as toddlers and raised in the monastery with no contact to the outside world. One of them, named Billy is tempted into going in the tunnels hidden under the monastery. On the walls of the tunnels are massive large worms. Billy finds a study in one of the tunnels with mysterious books in it. He begins to write a story. Billy lures all of the other students except for Samuel, who knows the power of the books. Back in Paradise, the town is coming undone. The people of Paradise have been listening to Black's lies. Johnny is the only one left that knows the truth about Black. He knows that he is a demon. Johnny is sitting in his room when his red shooter marble floats up into the air. He follows it all of the way up to the monastery where he meets Samuel. Samuel tells him what is really going on in the town below, that Black was really written into existence by Billy writing in the books. Samuel tells Johnny that he will send a policeman to save the people from Marsuvees Black. Johnny goes back down to Paradise and waits for the morning when the policeman will show up. When he wakes up he goes outside and sees a man standing at the other end of the street. Johnny runs up to him and finds out that his name is Thomas Hunter, after the man that had saved the world a few years before in the circle trilogy. Thomas and Johnny go around town catching all of the people that are under Black's influence. They round all of them up and lock them in the church kitchen. Johnny goes home to sleep and get ready for the next day. He goes to the church the following morning to find the people gone along with Thomas. He runs out the back door of the church and sees the entire town standing there watching something in one of the trees. He follows their gaze to see Thomas swinging on a rope from a tree. He had been cut and bruised and stripped down to his undergarments. Johnny runs up to the monastery crying. He runs into the basement of the monastery to the tunnels. He runs down the first tunnel and goes into the study that Billy and his friend Darcy have been using to write. Billy tells him that it is pointless to keep going and Johnny writes in the book that he would have great powers. To counter it, Billy and Darcy write that they would have great powers. Johnny runs away and Samuel finds him. Samuel tells Johnny to go back to town and they make a plan to beat Black. Johnny goes back and hides while he waits for the plan to be set in motion. Samuel comes down to Paradise and the townspeople murder him after he destroys half the town with the truth inside him, and they nail him to the bar door. DA(David Abraham, who is Samuel's father) had written in the books that Samuel would come back to life once his duty was done, and that the books would never be found again by any living soul. Samuel comes back to life and the town is rebuilt from the ashes when he does come back. Black takes the book that he had and disappeared when he saw Samuel coming. All of the children that had gone into the tunnels came back out and saw the wrong in what they were doing. They were all sent off to live with different families everywhere and Paradise went back to how it was before. Showdown is a wonderful story of discovering the truth and having faith and resisting deception. It is one of Ted Dekker's best novels.
